What to look for
Genuine vintage Chanel earrings carry a stamped cartouche — an oval or round plaque reading CHANEL, the registered trademark symbol, and MADE IN FRANCE. From the mid-1980s onward most pieces also carry a season code: a two-digit year followed by a letter. P is printemps (spring), A is automne (autumn), C is the cruise collection. So a pair marked 94 P came from the spring 1994 collection. Pieces made before this system, and some licensed 1970s production, are marked differently or not at all — which is exactly why provenance matters more than the stamp alone.
The other thing worth knowing: most vintage Chanel earrings are clip-on rather than pierced. If you have pierced ears and want vintage, say so when you enquire — it narrows the search considerably and is worth knowing before you fall for a pair.
Condition, honestly
On costume jewellery the things that actually degrade are the plating and the clip mechanism. That is what we inspect and photograph — wear to the gold tone, tension in the clip, any loss of finish at the edges. We only buy in Rank A and Rank S condition, and if a pair has light wear we say so and price it accordingly.
